Complicated profile of Newtown shooter

Accused Newtown shooter Adam Lanza was spending more time alone in the months leading up to the mass shooting as his mother, Nancy Lanza, attempted to encourage him to be independent despite his mental disabilities, a Hartford Courant/Frontline investigation has found. In a new documentary called "Raising Adam Lanza," which airs Tuesday night on PBS, reporters from the Courant attempt to retrace the steps taken by Nancy and Adam in the years leading up to the shooting, complicating the picture that has occasionally appeared in the media of Nancy as a gun obsessed mother who was in denial about her son's mental challenges.

Adam is believed to have shot his mother four times in the head as she slept on Dec. 14 before shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary, where he attended school as a child, and killing 20 children and six women. He then took his own life.

Frontline and The Hartford Courant provided Yahoo News with several previously unpublished childhood and teenage photos of Adam Lanza they uncovered in their investigation.

The 20-year-old had been spending more time alone in his mother's $500,000 home in the affluent Connecticut suburb in the months leading up the shooting, Courant reporters Alaine Griffin and Josh Kovner found in their investigation. Adam's social world gradually began shrinking after he left Newtown High School at the age of 16 to enroll in a nearby college, where he made As and Bs before withdrawing there, as well. Since 2010, Adam had not attended school.

Between 2010 and 2012, Nancy took Adam to nearby gun ranges to practice shooting. Nancy purchased four firearms, including the Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle Adam is believed to have used in the attack, during the same period. Her friends say Nancy used target practice as a way to bond with her withdrawn son. Police also uncovered thousands of dollars worth of violent video games in the Lanzas' home. Police believe Adam may have been inspired by the video games he played in the attack, since he changed the magazines of his weapons more frequently than was necessary, Frontline reported. Late Sunday, the Courant also reported that Adam may have felt that he was in direct competition with Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, based on news articles about Breivik's 2011 crime they found in the Lanzas' home.

In the months before the attack, Nancy took frequent trips and left Adam at home unsupervised--including on one trip this past Thanksgiving--in an attempt to make him more independent.

Her friends say Nancy is the forgotten 27th victim that day.

"She's been described as some sort of gun nut or survivalist and this other misconception that she was a bad mother," her friend John Bergquist told Frontline. But he said her life "revolved around caring for Adam."

Adam was diagnosed at a young age with sensory integration disorder, a medically controversial diagnosis that meant Adam had trouble coping with bright lights, loud noises, and knowing when he was in pain. Later, when he was in middle school, Adam was also diagnosed with Asperger's, a condition related to autism that can make social interaction challenging. (Medical experts cautioned that autism disorders are not associated with violent behavior.)

A friend of Nancy?s remembered that when Adam was just six years old, he did not like to be touched. If children his age touched them, he recoiled or became upset. "He was angry with them," Marvin LaFontaine, Nancy's friend, told Frontline. Richard Novia, who co-founded the tech club Adam joined while he attended Newtown High School, told Frontline Adam would have "episodes" as a teen where he would completely withdraw from the world, sometimes sitting in a corner, motionless.

Nancy raised Adam and his older brother in their Newtown home on her own after she and her husband separated in 2001. In 2009, the couple officially divorced, and Adam abruptly cut off contact with his father in 2010 for reasons that are unclear.

Nancy's friends said she was planning on moving to either Washington or North Carolina to enroll Adam in college again, so that he could get a degree in history.

How to transform a real estate eyesore into a cash cow

How to transform a real estate eyesore into a cash cow

Dian Hymer
Inman News?

It might seem counterintuitive to invest money in a home you're selling. Wouldn't it be better to save that money for improvements on your next home?

Even though the home sale market has improved impressively, buyers still pay more for homes they can move right into without having to do work. This is not to say that buyers won't buy homes that need updating, but they need to be able to see the potential. And the property needs to be priced right for the market, taking into account work that needs to be done.

For example, recently a home was sold in the desirable Crocker Highlands neighborhood in Oakland, Calif. It was owned by one family for more than 50 years. The property had deferred maintenance and a dated d?cor.

If the listing had been put on the market before it was partially updated, it would have been harder to sell and would have sold for less than it did with the repairs and tasteful upgrades.

Before the sellers ordered a structural pest control ("termite") inspection, they had some obvious defects corrected. This kept the cost of the remaining repairs down. It also improved the appearance of the house. A back porch that was in poor condition and was easily visible was rebuilt. A pink vinyl bathroom floor was replaced with a neutral vinyl.

The most dramatic change was achieved by removing the heavy dark draperies, dark furnishings and the dark flocked wallpaper in the foyer. The draperies were left off to expose the beautiful wood windows. The house was transformed from a dark, outdated home to a light-filled home with a lot of potential.

After all the personal property was out of the house, the shag carpet was removed to expose the hardwood floors that were then refinished. The interior was completely painted, and the house was professionally staged with furniture, artwork and accessories.

The house showed beautifully, even though the kitchen and bathrooms were old. The listing sold in one week with multiple offers for well over the asking price.

HOUSE HUNTING: Improving curb appeal, i.e., the way a house looks from the street, usually pays off. For some buyers, curb appeal is so important that they won't even look at a listing that lacks good street presence.

Enhancing curb appeal can often be done inexpensively. Trim overgrown plants to a size that allows buyers to see the architectural detail of the house. If the landscaping has been unkempt for years, remove dead plants and add colorful plants before the house goes on the market. A new lawn adds to the allure of a property.

Kitchens and bathrooms are important to today's homebuyers. However, it wouldn't be prudent to do a complete remodel just before you put your home on the market. You usually can't recoup the investment. Generally, fix-up-for-sale projects should be limited to cost-effective improvements like new paint, replacing outdated light fixtures and replacing worn floor coverings.

In the listing described above, the old bathrooms were given cosmetic upgrades. Toilets and pedestal sinks were replaced inexpensively. The original tub in this 1920s home was reglazed to look like new. Reglazing was also applied to the unattractive brown tile walls and shower in another bathroom. It turned an eyesore into a bathroom that buyers could live with until they remodeled.

You can improve the look of a dated kitchen with new stainless steel appliances, paint, updated light fixtures and a new floor, if necessary.

It's sad but true that most homes never look as good as when they're for sale. Resolve to keep your next home in good shape to increase your enjoyment.

THE CLOSING: It will be a lot easier to get ready for sale.

NFL Introducing New Aptitude Test At Combine

NFL will introduce a new aptitude test at this year's Scouting Combine, according to NFL.com.

The new test will be used in addition to the oft-maligned Wonderlic, and will not replace it. The name and exact method of the new test were not available, but National Football Scouting president Jeff Foster told NFL.com that "it's something that's a little more evolved than the Wonderlic."

The Wonderlic has been a part of Combine testing since first being introduced to the league in the 1970s by Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry. The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that must be answered in 12 minutes. A player's final score equals the number of questions they correctly answer in the allotted time.

Only one player ? former Bengals punter Pat McInally ? has ever recorded a perfect 50 on the Wonderlic. The highest scores among active players belong to Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and Browns tight end Benjamin Watson, both of whom scored 48.

But the Wonderlic's notoriety is largely due to the players who recorded its lowest scores, which include a 4 by current Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne and 6 by 49ers running back Frank Gore.

Vatican raises possibility of early March conclave

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican raised the possibility Saturday that the conclave to elect the next pope might start sooner than March 15, the earliest date possible under current rules that require a 15 to 20 day waiting period after the papacy becomes vacant.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that Vatican rules on papal succession are open to interpretation and that "this is a question that people are discussing."

Any change to the law itself would have to be approved by the pope before he resigns.

But if Vatican officials determine that the matter is just a question of interpreting the existing law, "it is possible that church authorities can prepare a proposal to be taken up by the cardinals on the first day after the papal vacancy" to move up the start of the conclave, Lombardi said.

The 15 to 20 day waiting period is in place to allow time for all cardinals who don't live in Rome to arrive, under the usual circumstance of a pope dying. But in this case the cardinals already know that this pontificate will end Feb. 28, with the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and therefore can get to Rome in plenty of time to take part in the conclave, Lombardi said.

The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24, with Palm Sunday Mass followed by Easter Sunday on March 31. In order to have a new pope in place in time for the most solemn liturgical period on the church calendar, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17, because of the strong tradition to hold installation Mass on a Sunday. Given the tight time frame, speculation has mounted that some arrangement would be made to start the conclave earlier than a strict reading of the law would allow.

Questions about the start of the conclave have swirled since Benedict stunned the world on Feb. 11, by announcing that he would retire, the first pontiff in 600 years to abdicate rather than stay in office until death. His decision has created a host of questions about how the Vatican will proceed, given that its plans for the so-called "sede vacante" ? or vacant seat ? period between papacies are based on the process starting with a papal death.

"In this moment we are not prepared," said Cardinal Franc Rode, the former head of the Vatican's office for religious orders who will vote in the conclave. "We have not been able to make predictions, strategies, plans, candidates. It is too early, but we will get there. In two or three weeks things will be put in place."

Meanwhile, a German journalist who has published several long interviews with Benedict over the years suggested that the pope strongly foreshadowed his retirement during an August conversation.

Peter Seewald said in an article for the German weekly Focus published Saturday that the pontiff had told him that his strength was diminishing and "not much more" could be expected from him as pope.

"I am an old man and my strength is running out," Seewald quoted the pope as saying. "And I think what I have done is enough."

Asked by Seewald whether he was considering resignation, Benedict responded: "That depends to what extent my physical strength will compel me to." The summer interview, as well as another in December, were for a new Benedict biography.

Seewald's 2010 book-length interview with Benedict, "Light of the World," laid the groundwork for a possible resignation.

In it, he quoted Benedict as saying: "If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right, and under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign."

He stressed then, however, that resignation was not an option to escape a particular burden, such as the scandal over sexual abuse by clerics which had erupted earlier in 2010.

In Saturday's article, Seewald recalled asking the pope in August how badly the 2012 scandal over leaks of papal documents, in which the pope's ex-butler was convicted of aggravated theft, had affected him.

Benedict said the affair had not thrown him off his stride or made him tired of office. "It is simply incomprehensible to me," he said.

The journalist said that when he last saw Benedict about 10 weeks ago, his hearing had deteriorated and he appeared to have lost vision in his left eye, adding that the pope had lost weight and appeared tired.

Benedict, however, appeared in good form on Saturday for some of his final audiences. He met with the Guatemalan president, a group of visiting Italian bishops, and had his farewell audience with Italian Premier Mario Monti.

"He was in good condition," Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina told reporters afterward. "He didn't seem tired, rather smiling, lively ? and happy and very clear in his decision to resign."

Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan and a leading contender to succeed Benedict, said several of the visiting bishops noted at the end of their audience that they were the last group of bishops to be received by the pope. "'This responsibility means you have to become a light for all,'" he quoted Benedict as saying.

Lombardi also gave more details about Benedict's final public audiences and plans for retirement, saying already 35,000 people had requested tickets for his final general audience to be held in St. Peter's Square on Feb. 27.

He said Benedict would spend about two months in the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome immediately after his abdication, to allow enough time for renovations to be completed on his retirement home ? a converted monastery inside the Vatican walls.

That means Benedict would be expected to return to the Vatican, no longer as pope, around the end of April or beginning of May, Lombardi said.

He was asked if and when the pope would meet with his successor and whether he would participate in his installation Mass. Like many open questions about the end of Benedict's papacy, Lombardi said, both issues simply haven't been resolved.

NAHL decides to hold four-team Robertson Cup in Frisco again, but Tornado does not get an automatic invite

    Here is the press release:

NAHL to host 2013 Robertson Cup Championship in Frisco, Texas

Four divisional playoff champions to play for National Championship from May 10-13, 2013

    ?
FRISCO, TEXAS ? The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced that the 2013 Robertson Cup Championship Tournament will be held from May 10-13, 2013 at the Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas, and for the first time in 10 years, will be hosted by the NAHL and not a member team.? The Robertson Cup crowns the NAHL?s playoff champion and also represents USA Hockey?s Tier II Junior National Champion. ?

This year?s event will mark the third time in the last 10 years that the Robertson Cup Championship tournament will have been held at the Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco.? Last season, the Texas Tornado hosted and won the tournament, winning their fifth Robertson Cup in the process.? Back in May, the NAHL Board of Governors voted to change the format to let the league operate and run the event, rather than a host team.? As a result, the winners of the four divisional playoff series will earn a berth to compete in the 2013 Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament.?

?The NAHL is excited to be hosting and operating the Robertson Cup Championship this season and we are happy to bring it back to Frisco, Texas,? said NAHL commissioner?Mark Frankenfeld. ?We received great feedback about the location and the venue from last year and we felt it was important to select a place that gave us the best opportunity to operate a first-class event.? We are confident that with the support of the City of Frisco, the Dallas Stars and the Dr Pepper Arena, we will be able to provide the players and fans with the best experience possible and in one of the best facilities of its kind in the country.?
    ?
This season also marks a change in the format from the previous 10 years, in which an NAHL member team has hosted and received an automatic bid to the event.? The NAHL switched to a host team format during the 2003-04 season.? Previous to that, the NAHL was an 11-team league and the Robertson Cup was decided in a divisional play-down format, in which two teams remained to play in a final series.? However, because of the growth and expansion of the NAHL in the past 10 years, the format was changed to eliminate long distance travel during the earlier playoff rounds.

Opened in September of 2003, the Dr Pepper Arena is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue located in Frisco, Texas, in the heart of Collin County ? one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. ?In addition to being home to the NAHL?s Texas Tornado, it?s the home practice facility and executive offices for the NHL?s Dallas Stars.? During the 2008-09 season, the Dr Pepper Arena was renovated to increase the seating capacity from 3,733 seats to 5,000-7,000 seats depending on the event, and includes 12 luxury suites and a full service Gold Club restaurant and bar.? ?In addition to hockey, the Dr Pepper Arena also hosts concerts, family shows, graduation ceremonies, trade shows and many other live entertainment and sporting events. ?

?The Dallas Stars are pleased and proud to once again be the host facility for the Robertson Cup Championship,? said the Dallas Stars??Ed Reusch, vice -president of the Dr Pepper Arena. ?We have a great working relationship with the North American Hockey League and we look forward to helping them produce a first-class event.? We feel that the Dr Pepper Arena is an ideal venue for these young men to compete for a National Championship and a place that the visiting fans will enjoy as well.?

In conjunction with the Robertson Cup Championship Tournament, the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) and North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) will both showcase their respective Top Prospects Tournaments, featuring 80 of the best players from each league.

The oldest junior hockey trophy in the United States, the Robertson Cup is named in honor ofChuck Robertson, a pioneer of junior hockey in the NAHL and youth hockey in the state of Michigan. Robertson was the owner of the Paddock Pools team when it won a record seven straight NAHL championships from 1976-83.

Beyonce shows marriage, miscarriage and Blue Ivy in documentary

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Beyonce is letting fans into her private life, introducing daughter Blue Ivy to the world and talking about motherhood, marriage and miscarriage in a new documentary.

The 31-year-old pop singer and her rapper husband, Jay-Z, 43, one of music's most influential couples, have guarded their privacy fiercely.

But in "Life is But a Dream," airing on Saturday on cable channel HBO, Beyonce gives fans a glimpse of how she works and even a peek at baby Blue Ivy, who has been shielded from paparazzi since her birth in January 2012.

The film, which Beyonce co-directed, is part of a return to performing after a year off since her first child was born.

Beyonce began her comeback with a controversial lip-synched performance of the national anthem at President Barack Obama's inauguration in January, followed by a live performance at the Super Bowl halftime show that wowed critics.

At the New York premiere of the documentary on Tuesday, the new mother said she wanted to share her altered perspective on life.

"Knowing that at this point in my life, this age is so wonderful because I see everything differently and I hope that I can share that with other people," she said.

The "Crazy in Love" singer addresses the widely reported claim from 2011 that she was faking her pregnancy, calling it "the most ridiculous rumor I've ever heard of me."

"To think that I'd be that vain ... especially after losing a child. The pain and trauma from that just makes it mean so much more to get an opportunity to bring life into the world," she says in the documentary.

The HBO film shows footage of a sonogram, Beyonce's growing bump and grainy video of herself posing nude as she neared her due date.

The arrival last year of Blue Ivy Carter gained worldwide media attention and prompted Beyonce to share more with her fans, launching a Tumblr page with snapshots of her family life.

Her miscarriage had been kept secret from the public until Jay-Z referred to it in his song "Glory," that he released following the birth of Blue Ivy.

In the documentary, Beyonce touched on the topic briefly, saying, "It was the saddest thing I've ever been through."

"My life is a journey. ... I had to go through my miscarriage, I believe I had to go through owning my company and managing myself ... ultimately your independence comes from knowing who you are and you being happy with yourself," she said.

"Life is But a Dream" also gives a peek into the Grammy-winner's four-year marriage to Jay-Z, showing the couple singing Coldplay's "Yellow" to each other.

How to DIY repair headphone jack or mute switch issues in an iPhone 4S

How to DIY repair headphone jack or mute switch issues in an iPhone 4S

If your iPhone 4S headphone jack or mute switch is giving you issues, a DIY repair on the cable that handles those functions can remedy the problem. Symptoms typically include audio cutting in and out when headphones are plugged in or no sound at all. The mute switch can also face issues where turning vibrate on or off results in no response or the switch itself being loose. These problems don't typically involve the actual mute switch, but the cable that lies underneath it.

Regardless whether you're having headphone jack or mute switch issues on your iPhone 4S, this guide can walk you through how to get both functions back in working order again.

Disclaimer: As with any repair, neither iMore nor The Pod Drop can be held responsible for any damage you may do to your device. It?s also worth considering that opening up your device to perform any repair or modification can and will void your Apple warranty. If you don?t feel comfortable opening your device, don?t. Use extreme care and caution when performing a repair on any device.

Not comfortable with DIY repair? Leave it to the pros

If you aren't comfortable performing a DIY repair on your own, don't. It is possible to cause more damage or run into issues you aren't ready for. In this case, it's probably better to either pay the money for a replacement device from Apple or use a local or mail-in service that will handle the repair and any issues that may arise for you.

The Pod Drop has many locations in the midwest and is a rapidly growing company. You can check for a Pod Drop location near you, mail it in, or use another third party repair service. For more information on mail-in repairs or possible Pod Drop locations near you, you can visit their website.

If you are comfortable with repairing your own device, put your ninja pants on and keep reading!

What you'll need to DIY replace an iPhone 4S headphone jack or mute switch

We recommend using only quality and genuine parts from a reputable supplier like eTech Parts. They have quality parts, tools, and much more for all your repair needs. You will find links to the specific parts you'll need for this repair in the list below.

    Video walkthrough

While the video walkthrough adds even more detail, it is meant to be used in correlation with the written steps below. It will show a complete breakdown of the device but smaller steps for each individual repair will be listed with high quality images in the actual guide below.

    Power off your iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S slide to power off

Before performing any repair you should always power off your device before opening it up.

    Remove the back plate

    1. Using your security screwdriver, remove the 2 screws on either side of the dock connector port.
    2. iPhone 4S dock connector screws
    3. Set them aside. They are both the exact same size and length so it does not matter if you mix them up. They are interchangeable.
    4. Gently slide up the back plate by applying a bit of pressure along the bottom with your thumbs and sliding upwards.
    5. iPhone 4S remove back plate
    6. Now lift off the back plate and set it aside.
    7. iPhone 4S back removal

Remove the battery and grounding clip

    1. Using your #00 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the battery in place.
    2. iPhone 4S bottom battery screw
    3. These screws are different lengths so make sure you remember which one goes where. The one that is slightly larger is the bottom screw.
    4. There is a tiny grounding clip underneath the battery clip where the first screw is located. Use your spudger tool or finger to remove it before prying the clip up. Many times it can go flying if you don't remove it first and then you'll have difficulty locating it so it's best to remove it first.
    5. iPhone 4S grounding clip removaliPhone 4S grounding clip
    6. Now use your spudger tool and at the bottom of the battery clip, gently pry upwards so the clip pops up.
    7. iPhone 4S battery clip
    8. Move to the edge of the iPhone where the volume buttons are located and use your spudger tool to carefully pry up the battery. It is stuck down with a good amount of adhesive so be careful when prying upwards that you don't bend the battery. This is why I do not use the plastic tab that is provided. It typically rips or bends the battery. If one part is resistant move your pry tool a little further down and gently start prying it up in different places taking care not to come too close to the volume button cables towards the top.
    9. iPhone 4S battery removal
    10. Once you've gotten the battery pulled out of the iPhone 4S we can move on.

Remove the top logic board shields

    1. Using your #00 Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws that hold the top silver shield in place and the one screw that holds the small black shield in place.
    2. iphone 4s logic board shield removal
    3. Now use your spudger or pry tool to gently lift the silver shield out of the iPhone.
    4. Use your spudger or pry tool to lift the black shield out of the iPhone.
    5. Set both shields aside and make sure your screws are organized for reassembly later.

Unclip the top logic board cables & remove the rear-facing camera

Using your spudger or pry tool carefully disconnect all the cables at the top of the logic board. There are seven cables total. One of the cables lies underneath the bottom most cable so you'll need to disconnect the cable over it before folding it back and revealing the shorter cable underneath.

Once you unclip the seven cables, you can lift the rear-facing camera directly out of the iPhone. It is only connected by one cable.

    Disconnect the dock connector

    1. Using your #00 Phillips screwdriver remove the shield that is covering the dock connector cable towards the middle left of the iPhone. Remember which screw came from where as they are different sizes. Gently lift the shield out of the iPhone and set it aside.
    2. Remove dock connector shield iPhone 4 CDMA
    3. Take your spudger tool and gently pry up the dock connector cable and peel it back as shown below. Perform this step with caution as there is adhesive on the underside of the cable. Take care not to rip the cable by pulling up to quickly.
    4. Remove dock connector cable iPhone 4 CDMA
    5. Leave the cable in this position and move on to the next section.

    Pry up the cellular antenna

    1. Using your spudger toolcarefully pry up the round connection for the cellular antenna. It should come up easily so pry up gently.
    2. Unclip antenna cable iPhone 4 CDMA
    3. You'll notice that it is wrapped around a metal clip. Gently unwrap it so it's sticking upwards and leave it in this position.

Remove the SIM card and tray

Using a SIM removal tool or a bent paper clip, eject the SIM tray and set it, and the SIM card aside.

    Remove the logic board

    1. Remove the three #00 Phillips screws at the top, middle, and bottom left of the logic board with your #00 Phillips screwdriver. The top screw has a piece of tape over it you'll need to peel back. After removing it you'll also notice a gold grounding clip underneath it. Make sure you don't lose it as you'll need it for reassembly.
    2. There are two more screws holding the logic board in place and you'll need to remove them with your flat head screwdriver. They are located at the top right and bottom of the logic board.
    3. Now you should be able to lift the logic board out of the iPhone. Use the area that the rear-facing camera was located and the bottom of the logic board to lift it straight out.

Remove the metal retainer & front facing camera

    How-to-remove-iPhone-4-camera-retainer

There is a metal retainer covering the front facing camera. To remove it use your pry tool to gently pull it off. Make sure you don't lose it as you'll need it for reassembly. Now that the metal retainer has been removed you can gently lift the front facing camera out of the iPhone 4S.

Remove the headphone jack and mute switch sensor cable assembly

    1. Start by removing the screw holding on the upper antenna with your #00 Phillips screwdriver.
    2. Using a metal spatula or pair of tweezers, peel the upper antenna away from the headphone jack. It is only held down with a bit of adhesive and should come loose rather easily. Take care to pay attention as to how it was laid so you know how to put it back during reassembly.
    3. Use your tweezers or a pry tool to carefully loosen the noise canceling mic from the upper frame. Do not attempt to completely remove it since it is attached to the headphone jack cable. You'll only want to loosen it enough so the adhesive completely breaks.
    4. Again, using tweezers or a pry tool carefully pull the headphone jack assembly out of your iPhone 4S. It is still attached so you'll only want to dislodge it from the midframe for now.
    5. Now using the same #00 Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw towards the top of the casing.
    6. Now travel a little further down the inside of the midframe and remove the four screws with your #00 Phillips screwdriver that hold in the vibrate switch as well as the volume buttons.
    7. Carefully dislodge the vibrate switch using your tweezers or pry tool taking care not to completely pull it out just yet.
    8. We now have all the components dislodged that are attached to the headphone and mute switch flex cable. From here we can now carefully pull up the cable and remove it in its entirety from the device.

Replace the headphone jack and mute switch cable

To replace the headphone jack and mute switch cable, follow the removal instructions exactly in reverse. Please note that you may have to transfer the metal brackets to the new cable if the replacement cable you purchased did not come with the brackets pre-installed.

Replace the front facing camera & metal retainer

    remove-iPhone-4-front-facing-camera

Now replace the front facing camera with the new replacement part. Once it is securely in place you can replace the metal retainer by snapping it back in place.

    Reassemble your iPhone 4S

To reassemble your iPhone 4S, you can either follow all these directions in exact reverse order or view our reassembly video guide above which will walk you through how to reassemble it from screen to turning it back on and testing it. For a headphone jack and sensor cable replacement, you'll need to watch from around 5 minutes and 3 seconds to the end of the video.

    And ...done!

Once you've gotten your iPhone 4S completely reassembled and you're positive you don't have any leftover screws, you can go ahead and turn the device back on. If all went well, you should see the Apple logo. Since we've replaced a cable that controls both the headphone jack and the silent switch, make sure you test both thoroughly to make sure that they're working correctly.

If they are, pat yourself on the back. You're officially a DIY ninja.

New Study Finds Labels on Vitamin D Supplements Often Wrong

In a research letter published on Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association-Internal Medicine, scientists noted that they found that vitamin D pills that they prescribed during their studies often did not have the potency that the manufacturers had claimed. They also noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate vitamins and other supplements, so "potency may not be well evaluated."

The researchers had become curious after testing vitamin D supplements that were being given to women participating in a study regarding the supplements' efficacy when used during menopause. The amount of variance in the prescribed pills, according to their research letter, led them to begin testing over-the-counter varieties as well.

Here is some of the key information that was released on Monday regarding this study into vitamin D supplements.

    * Overall, researchers say that they discovered that only one-third of the pills that they were giving to women in their initial trial met U.S. standards for potency.

    * U.S. standards are determined by the the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, and state that compounded pills, such as the ones that were being used in the initial trial, must contain between 90 percent and 110 percent of the active ingredient listed on the label.

    * Dr. Erin LeBlanc , who is one of the authors of the study and an endocrinologist at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore., told the media on Monday that her team found that "the potency of these vitamin D supplements varied widely," as quoted by USA Today.

    * The amount of actual vitamin D in any one of the supplements that the team tested ended up being between 9 percent and 140 percent of the actual amount listed on the packaging.

    * When five pills were tested and the results averaged together, the results often were closer to being 100 percent of the promised dosage, but individual pills may contain too much or too little of the supplement to be effective.

    * LeBlanc and her team found that even the pills that they were using in their initial trial, which were prescription strength and had been compounded, often contained between 52 percent and 146 percent of the vitamin D promised on the packaging.

    * The concern, according to the team, is that those taking over-the-counter vitamin D supplements to treat a known deficiency may not get enough of it to actually help if the pills do not contain the amount of the supplement that is claimed on the labels.

    * LeBlanc noted herself on Monday that if people with a known deficiency "are consistently taking a supplement with little vitamin D in it, they could face health risks," as quoted by MyHealthNewsDaily.

Vanessa Evans is a musician and freelance writer based in Michigan, with a lifelong interest in health and nutrition issues.

PFT: NFL planning '14 Super Bowl contingencies

    Steve SpurrierAP

There are many people who think South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is taking a huge risk by playing his junior season, since he?s ineligible to enter the NFL draft.

As you might imagine, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, whose mortgage payment rides on the backs of unpaid interns such as Clowney, disagrees.

Clowney himself scoffed at the notion, tweeting ?I?m playing lol,? but Spurrier told Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal Constitution he thought the suggestion was off-base.

?Well, I hope he plays this year, and I certainly believe he should play,? Spurrier said. ?Now if money was his only goal in life, then he couldn?t play. And he might not get into a car before next year?s draft, so he wouldn?t be in a car wreck and get injured. He would be just very, very careful for a year not to have any kind of injury.

?But Jadeveon likes football. Football players play football. They don?t wait around on this, that or the other. He?s really good about avoiding injuries and so forth. He knows how to get out of harm?s way if there?s a big pileup around a tackle. I think the odds of him getting hurt as not nearly as much as a running back or somebody like that.

?I think he wants to play. I certainly hope and believe he does. I think he should play for South Carolina this season.?

Spurrier said the reaction in the media was understandable, given that it?s the offseason (what are we supposed to talk about, basketball?). But he also disputed the idea that Clowney?s financial security (which he?d enjoy by being a top-five pick, if not higher) was the most important element.

?Most of the guys that say he should sit out, they don?t realize the benefits of being on a college football team, and continuing with your teammates to have as big of a year as you possibly can,? Spurrier said. ?The money is going to be there down the road, so why would a person give up the thrill of playing college football?

?Those people have never played football, so they say he should sit out and get the money. That?s the only side of sports they see ? the money. There?s a lot more to it than just the money.?

All that?s easy for Spurrier to say, because he keeps getting paid even when Marcus Lattimore?s knee gets turned into spaghetti.

And while there are good and noble intentions for wanting a young man to stay in school, the financial reality is that Clowney is gambling millions on the proposition that his luck is good enough to avoid injury.

Delete Your Google Voice Account Without Losing Your NumberSo you made the full switch to Google Voice, but decided that it isn't for you. Want to delete your account without losing the new number you made everyone memorize? MsCassLopez points out a lesser-known feature that lets you do just that.

Google finally added the ability to delete your Voice account, but if you want to keep the number associated with your account, you can actually port your number away from Google Voice. It costs $3 to do, unless you've already ported your number to Google Voice, in which case it's free.

To do it, just head to google.com/voice/unlock and click the Unlock My Number button. Once you're done, you'll need to talk to your service provider (e.g. Verizon or AT&T) and have them port your number back. That way, you can continue using your phone without having to give anyone a new number.
